Bamako, April 21, 2026 - Mali has officially launched an ambitious initiative to modernize and revitalize its National Museum, in partnership with Spain, as part of broader efforts to promote and preserve the country’s cultural heritage. The project, titled “Rethinking the National Museum of Mali,” was inaugurated on Tuesday during a ceremony held at the National Museum of Bamako. The event was presided over by the Minister of Crafts, Culture, Industry and Tourism, Mamou Daffé. Backed by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the initiative marks a significant step toward enhancing the museum’s role as a key cultural institution. The project is structured around three main pillars: strengthening the capacity of museum staff through specialized training, improving the conservation and security of collections, and expanding cultural outreach to engage wider audiences, particularly young people. Officials emphasized that the initiative aims not only to safeguard Mali’s rich cultural assets but also to make them more accessible and relevant to contemporary society. The partnership reflects growing cultural cooperation between Mali and Spain, while underscoring the importance of heritage preservation as a driver of education, identity, and sustainable development.
