Sahel Displacement Cooperation

Bamako, April 13, 2026 - The 14th session of the Tripartite Commission between Mali, Burkina Faso, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) opened on Monday at the Salam Hotel in Bamako, focusing on coordinated responses to forced displacement in the Sahel. Building on the outcomes of the previous session held in Ouagadougou, the meeting aims to strengthen cooperation between the three parties to facilitate the voluntary repatriation of Malian refugees residing in Burkina Faso, as well as Burkinabe refugees hosted in Mali. The discussions reaffirmed the shared commitment of the two countries and UNHCR to develop durable solutions to displacement challenges affecting the sub-region, including voluntary return, local integration, and enhanced protection mechanisms for vulnerable populations. According to figures presented by the UNHCR representative for Mali and Burkina Faso, Mali currently hosts more than 291,000 refugees and asylum seekers of various nationalities. This includes approximately 200,000 Burkinabe nationals and around 70,000 Malian displaced persons and returnees. At the same time, more than 336,000 Malians are registered as refugees outside Burkina Faso, underscoring the scale of cross-border displacement in the region. The Tripartite Commission remains a key platform for regional coordination, aimed at addressing humanitarian needs while promoting stability and cooperation between neighboring states. Defense Infrastructure: Foundation Laid for New Military Camp in Dioïla Dioïla, April 16, 2026 - In a separate development aimed at strengthening national security infrastructure, Mali has launched construction work on a new military installation in the Banico region. The Minister of State, Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs, Lieutenant General Sadio Camara, officially laid the foundation stone for the future Dioïla military camp on Thursday. The ceremony marks a significant step in enhancing the operational capacity of the Malian Armed Forces, particularly in strategic areas of the country. Authorities say the new facility is expected to improve military readiness, reinforce territorial coverage, and support ongoing efforts to strengthen national defense capabilities.
