Mali-China Health Cooperation: Joint Laboratory Project Targets Emerging Diseases

Bamako, April 14, 2026 - Mali is strengthening its scientific and health cooperation with China through a new joint laboratory initiative aimed at combating emerging infectious diseases. The Secretary General of the Ministry of Health and Social Development took part on Tuesday in the official presentation of the project, which brings together Malian and Chinese expertise in research and public health response. The initiative is being jointly implemented by the Charles Mérieux Center for Infectious Diseases in Mali and the Institute of Pathogen Biology under the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing scientific collaboration in the face of increasingly complex global health threats. Titled the “Sino-Malian Joint Laboratory Project for Combating Emerging Infectious Diseases,” the program is designed to enhance Mali’s national capacities in key areas, including biomedical research, disease diagnostics, and rapid response mechanisms. The project will run over a three-year period and is funded by a strategic research and diagnostics program under China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, underscoring Beijing’s growing involvement in health cooperation initiatives across Africa. In a separate development, regional governance issues were also in focus as Mali’s Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga held discussions with the President of Niger’s National Communication Observatory. The meeting addressed regulatory frameworks for media within the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), highlighting ongoing efforts to harmonize communication policies across member countries. Together, these developments illustrate Mali’s dual approach of strengthening international scientific partnerships while actively engaging in regional coordination on governance and information management.
