Fuel Shortages Persist in Mali Despite Recent Supply Arrivals

Bamako, April 2026 - Fuel supply disruptions continue to affect several parts of Mali, with petrol and diesel shortages reported at multiple service stations operated under the Shell network. In a statement, Vivo Energy Mali confirmed temporary shortages of gasoline and diesel at selected outlets, attributing the situation to ongoing supply chain disruptions affecting national distribution. Authorities and industry sources indicate that the crisis, which began in September 2025, is linked to a broader fuel supply disruption caused by a blockade attributed to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin). The situation has reportedly been punctuated by temporary arrangements involving negotiations for the passage of fuel convoys. According to reports, a recent agreement reached on March 18 led to the release of approximately 200 individuals in exchange for the safe passage of fuel tankers toward the capital. Despite the arrival of hundreds of trucks in recent days, supply levels remain insufficient to meet the needs of Bamako, where economic activity continues to be heavily disrupted. The fuel shortage adds to broader pressures on transport, electricity generation, and basic services, as the capital continues to experience periodic shortages and distribution constraints.
