Belgium Raises Concerns Over Rising Number of Congolese Asylum Seekers

Speaking at the start of an official visit to the DRC on April 13, 2026, the minister indicated that the issue would be a key topic of discussion with Congolese authorities, particularly in light of the rising number of applicants recorded in recent years. According to figures provided by the minister, the number of Congolese asylum seekers in Belgium has doubled over a two-year period, increasing from 1,250 in 2023 to 2,500 in 2025. The upward trend has continued into 2026, with more than 450 additional applications registered in the first three months of the year. “This is a significant increase that Belgium has been facing for several months,” she said. Minister Van Bossuyt noted that a large proportion of applicants reportedly originate from Kinshasa, a region not directly affected by the armed conflict in eastern DRC. She suggested that this raises questions regarding the grounds on which some asylum claims are based. The minister also warned that individuals found to have provided false information during the asylum process could face legal consequences, including rejection of their applications, deportation, or restrictions affecting their ability to live and work in Belgium. Belgian authorities say they intend to continue discussions with Congolese officials as part of broader cooperation on migration management and asylum procedures.
