Azawad, April 6, 2026 - Several towns in northern Mali, including Tinzaouatène and Timbuktu, marked the 14th anniversary of the declaration of independence proclaimed on April 6, 2012, through symbolic gatherings and public commemorations. Residents participated in events reaffirming their attachment to Azawad identity and expressing continued support for self-determination. The commemorations were largely symbolic, featuring community gatherings and political messaging centered on regional identity. The Strategic Reflection Forum for Azawad issued statements on April 6 and 9, 2026, urging the United Nations to recognize the right to self-determination and to initiate an international investigation into alleged human rights violations in the region. The forum also criticized the Malian authorities, citing what it described as insufficient political representation and worsening security conditions. It further called for international protection measures for civilian populations affected by ongoing instability. The commemorations highlight continuing political tensions in northern Mali, where questions of governance, security, and identity remain highly contested alongside persistent armed conflict.
