ARUSHA, Tanzania, July 23, 2026 - Former MRND president Mathayo Ngirumpatse asked the IRMCT for release or early release, citing serious ill health and his age of 86.

His lawyer Frédéric Weyl cited diabetes, hepatitis C, hypertension, a stroke and eye disease, saying Ngirumpatse needs assistance with daily tasks.

The ICTR upheld his life sentence in 2014 for genocide and crimes against humanity.

This detail was included in the mid-to-late July RWANDA briefing.

A previous release request was rejected in 2024 because he had not served the applicable threshold.
