Kampala, Uganda, July 27, 2026 - After the first statutory national Cleaning Day, heaps of rotting waste lined roadsides from Kampala to Mbale, blocking businesses, disrupting traffic and releasing strong odours.

What began as a mobilisation for civic sanitation exposed weak collection capacity as authorities admitted they struggled to evacuate the volumes generated.

Traders said the aftermath undercut the exercise’s public-health goals.
