Two Soldiers Sentenced to Death for Killing Nurse in Haut-Uele

ISIRO, June 22, 2026 - A military court in Isiro has sentenced two soldiers of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) to death for the murder of a nurse in Mungbere, Watsa Territory, Haut-Uele Province.

The convictions were handed down during summary proceedings after the court found the two soldiers guilty of criminal conspiracy, disobeying military orders and murder.

The incident occurred on June 7, when a warrant officer and a private, who had been deployed to Watsa as part of military operations against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), allegedly killed a nurse and wounded a civilian in Mungbere.

In addition to the death sentence, the private was sentenced to five years of penal servitude for aggravated assault and battery. The court also ordered him to pay the victim's family the equivalent of US$50,000 in damages.

Two other soldiers were each sentenced to three years of penal servitude for violating military regulations. The court granted them mitigating circumstances based on their young age.

A fifth soldier was acquitted after the court found insufficient evidence to establish his involvement in the case.
