Kampala, Uganda, July 31, 2026 - Human-rights lawyer Eron Kiiza argued that treason proceedings before Justice Baguma are legally invalid, citing a report by court-appointed state-brief advocates that, he said, shows Besigye never accepted them.
Kiiza said no advocate may be imposed on an accused entitled to counsel of choice, and noted the appointed lawyers admitted they still awaited disclosure and the indictment-raising doubts about readiness.
The critique landed after Besigye’s collapse and the aborted follow-up hearing.
This detail was included in the mid-to-late July UGANDA briefing.
