BUJUMBURA, Burundi, July 25, 2026 - Congolese analyst and aid worker Benjamin Babunga remained detained after his May 27 arrest on allegations including terrorism, treason and endangering national security, accusations he denies.

The prosecution relied on social-media posts, including comments on conditions in Bukavu and a drone attack at Kisangani airport.

This detail was included in the mid-to-late July RWANDA briefing.

His lawyers said the posts contained no threats or criminal conduct and that he was being prosecuted for commentary.

A court ordered bail on July 15, but he had not been released pending a prosecution response.
