Rwandan Diaspora in Indonesia Uses Culture to Mark Liberation

JAKARTA, Indonesia, July 17, 2026 - Rwandans in Indonesia marked the 32nd anniversary of liberation over two days of cultural and diplomatic activities, with musician Ruti Joel performing for Indonesian officials, diplomats, international organizations and members of the diaspora.

Ambassador Sheikh Abdul Karim Harelimana said Rwanda’s progress rested on leadership, unity and the collective will to rebuild after the Genocide against the Tutsi.

Indonesian representative Santo Darmosumarto described Rwanda’s experience as a lesson in unity, reconstruction, peace and reconciliation.

Organizers said the event used culture to strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Rwanda opened its embassy in Jakarta in June 2024.
