Kampala, Uganda, July 29, 2026 - Besigye, 70, collapsed and lost consciousness during his High Court treason hearing while protesting continuation of the trial without lawyers of his choosing, after Lukwago’s detention and related defence disruptions.

Witnesses said he repeatedly shouted “stop” before falling in the dock.

This detail was included in the mid-to-late July UGANDA briefing.

He was taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital’s intensive-care unit under heavy security.

Wife Winnie Byanyima said he was unconscious and unresponsive; family members reported difficulty securing preferred medical care.

Son Adam Ampa appealed to Museveni and Gen.

Muhoozi for humanitarian release.

Exiled opposition figure Bobi Wine called forcing an ill detainee into court a rights violation.

Besigye has been held since a November 2024 abduction in Kenya and return to face treason charges with aide Obeid Lutale.
