Uganda Declared Ebola-Free After 42-Day Surveillance Window

Kampala, Uganda, July 28, 2026 - Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi declared Uganda officially Ebola-free after completing the mandatory 42-day monitoring period that began when the last Ugandan national patient was discharged on June 16.

He said nationwide intensified surveillance found no new cases and no unexplained community transmission.

The outbreak recorded 20 confirmed infections-including Congolese nationals, health workers and a driver-with two deaths, both among patients from the DRC, and a case fatality rate near 10%.

Baryomunsi stressed that the 2026 flare was a documented importation with fully mapped transmission chains and quarantined contacts.

He urged continued vigilance along the West Nile-Kisoro belt because the epidemic remains active in eastern Congo.
