Rwanda and Chad Sign Cooperation Agreement to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Kigali, April 9, 2026 - Rwanda and Chad have signed a new cooperation agreement establishing a Joint Commission aimed at enhancing bilateral relations and promoting joint development initiatives.

The agreement was signed by Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olivier Nduhungirehe, and his Chadian counterpart, Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul.

According to officials, the Joint Commission will serve as a framework to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors and facilitate the implementation of shared projects between the two countries.

Fadoul stated that the agreement builds on existing ties and reflects a commitment to cooperation grounded in mutual respect and African solidarity. He added that the timing of the agreement is appropriate, given the already strong relationship between Rwanda and Chad.

For his part, Nduhungirehe highlighted the opportunities created by the new framework, emphasizing its role in strengthening collaboration and advancing development initiatives in both countries.

During the discussions, Nduhungirehe also conveyed a message from President Paul Kagame to Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby. The message included a request for Chad’s support for the re-election bid of Louise Mushikiwabo as Secretary-General of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF).

Officials described the agreement as a step toward consolidating diplomatic and economic ties, while reinforcing regional cooperation efforts on the African continent.
