AFC/M23 Condemns Tshisekedi's Houston Remarks as Threat to Peace Efforts

Goma, June 18, 2026 - The AFC/M23 has strongly criticized President Félix Tshisekedi over remarks he made in Houston, United States, accusing him of undermining ongoing peace efforts and signaling a preference for a military solution to the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In a statement issued in Goma, AFC/M23 political coordinator Corneille Nangaa described the president's comments as an "irresponsible" and "warmongering" declaration made despite ongoing negotiations and an agreed ceasefire protocol.

According to Nangaa, Tshisekedi's assertion that government forces were making progress against their opponents and would soon retake Goma and Bukavu demonstrated a commitment to military action rather than dialogue.

He argued that such statements threaten diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict and undermine mediation efforts.

Nangaa also warned that AFC/M23 would defend itself against any military action launched by government forces, saying the movement would respond to what it considers threats from Kinshasa.

The exchange comes as peace initiatives continue to seek a lasting ceasefire and renewed dialogue between the Congolese government and AFC/M23. However, fighting and tensions have persisted on the ground, with both sides maintaining differing interpretations of the commitments made under the peace process.
